Hope you have your bat issue sorted out by now and are living bat-free, haha.

But I wanted to chime in and say that I recently learned that if there’s any chance you’ve been bitten in your sleep (it can happen without you waking up), go see a medical professional and take proper rabies precautions. I saw a video of a guy in a hospital who ultimately died from rabies, from a dog bite weeks earlier. I don’t want to scare you, but it’s NOT a pleasant way to go, and once the symptoms come and you go to seek help, it’s too late, basically 0% survival. This poor guy was desperately trying to drink water and his body was violently spasming and rejecting it, that’s one of the main issues, you can’t drink anymore, and there’s just nothing the doctors can do for you. It was truly awful.

So I say all that to say “do NOT play around with even POSSIBLE rabies”, it’s very serious stuff. PLEASE make sure you and everyone in your household gets looked at unless you saw the bat come in and it was removed the same day, and no one slept in a room possibly shared with a bat.

I live in a house that was built in 1896. When we first bought it bats were more of a problem, but sealing up openings in the walls and soffits has pretty much solved the issue. We still occasionally will get a bat, but it's more like every two years rather than every month. Last time we got a bat, I caught it against the ceiling with as bathroom trash can, my son grabbed some cardboard, I slid it along the ceiling and took the whole assembly outside.

Open a window and let it out. Also keep the light off so you don't hurt it's eyes and keep your pets under control. If it does manage to do something dumb and kill itself there's a phone number you call in the UK and they send you a dead bat pack so you can post it to the government.

Chase it out? I don't know. Don’t kill it. Bats are harmless unless they have rabies and that’s pretty rare.

Open a window, wait for it to leave, most likely at might when it flies out to feed on insects, then close the window.

Call an exterminator or animals control to see what to do. But don’t fuck with bats
