There was no law in the west. Even if there was a Marshall it was unlikely that he would be nearby. Criminals could kill and rob whomever they wanted and justice was doled out by lynch mobs or a posse. If they knew who you were, they would put out a bounty on your head, Dead or Alive. There are still bounty hunters in the US, the most famous being “Dog the Bounty Hunter” in Hawaii. Saddam Husain had a bounty put in him, dead or alive. And then they hung him after they pulled him out of his hole he was hiding in.
The hanging Judge. The only law West of the Pecos it was said "Judge Roy Bean, the `Law West of the Pecos,' holding court at the old town of Langtry, Texas in 1900, trying a horse thief. This building was courthouse and saloon. No other peace officers in the locality at that time."
