In that case, I live in a region called Pays de la Loire, literally the country of the Loire, Loire is the name of the river, it's a long one indeed. So my guess is that this river was famous enough to be incorporated in the name of the region.

Culturally and historically we're tied with our dear siblings the Nordic countries - even tho the Americans have had an influence after having their military there for so long.
