Back home, we washed them by hand and in the little brook that ran through our village. This was before I came to the US around 10 years old. My mom did till into her 40s.
she still washes some of her own by hand in her sink.

I sometimes wash clothes that are extremely dirty by hand, in the sink, before putting them in the clothes washer. Especially if they have stains.
