The day I failed my first exam in college.
I’ve been honor roll my entire academic life, up until that point. The semester before, I had made the dean’s list at my school. I got comfortable in a class that I was sure was an easy A and I was wrong. It was emotionally devastating for me to fail, and when I went back to my dorm room I spent the better part of an hour just crying and feeling miserable, like I was no longer allowed to be considered a person. And then I stopped crying and calmed down and realized that I had worked myself up into an appetite. To make myself feel better, I decided I would take the walk across campus to the grill that had better food than the cafeteria.
When I opened my door, there was a bouquet of flowers there. It was a gift from my hall neighbors, apologizing for being so loud for most of the semester. In hindsight they likely just regifted it to me because they didn’t want it but I didn’t care, it made me so happy to have a gift like that after being that emotional wreck. I put it in my window and left in a much better mood to go get my lunch. On the way, I noticed a crowd gathering at the library and even though it was a little out of my way, I decided to head over and see what was going on. The campus bible study group was advertising their time by giving away free pizzas from my favorite pizza chain. I ended up taking 3 boxes with me to the grill, shares them with strangers and ate my fill. I spent the rest of the day much happier.
In my experience, that was the universe telling me it’s okay to fail, that it wasn’t as awful as I’d been led to believe it was. That was the best day of my life so far
