Does it offend you when someone says "I don't care"?

Heard a goofy little discussion about this on the radio a while ago between the DJs so taking it to the GaG stage. Does it bother you when someone says "I don't care" to you? Like in terms of you asking them something and they respond with something like "I don't care what we do, it's fine," or "Cook whatever you want, I don't care." Or maybe when they use "I don't care" in any other situation?

Yes. It really pisses me off actually. If I ask you what you want and then I you say IDC and then I go on to suggest Chinese Mexican Italian Greek Japanese or Peruvian (by the way you should definitely try Peruvian) and you say no I'd rather have barbecue then I hope you rot in the lowest level of hell.

Depends how serious the topic is and/or if they really put the mental effort into understanding my POV.

There have on a few isolated incidents gotten “I don’t care” and justifiably deserved it (I was being selfish, stupid, etc in the moment).

But most of the time it’s rude if it’s a serious issue at work, relationship, professional engagement, etc. The other person is just being conceited.

If they really don't care, then I won't care either. But if they are just being a smart arse, then it's offensive.

Truthfully, it depends on the context in which it is used. Baby boomer"s children used the term "whatever' to try to disarm parental leverage. It worked and it was infuriating. But, when someone is asking for your input, it is a different matter. It would be more truthful to say 'I have no Preference in that matter" which indicates that you have at least thought about the matter and are not trying to flip them off. I think what gets under my skin is when someone says" I don't care and then objects to the choice made by others that did respond.

Well, I'll tell you. If it's a big thing it doesn't bother me. I can relate. But that,"What do you want to eat." It pisses me off. It's not a hard thing.

Whenever I see scenarios of someone asking somebody what they want to eat and the other person says "whatever/I don't care," I always think of the scene in The Joy Luck club when one of the Asian women suspected her husband was cheating when she asked him what he wanted for dinner and he was like I don't care, make what you want.
