It used to be common for a guy to cruise with his arm around his girlfriend while she sat right next to him. That is until more and more cars after the 1970s came with bucket seats and center consoles.
I got my first car in 1970 when I was 16. It was a 1965 Rambler American 2 dr. When I was 18, my dad gave me his 1963 Buick LeSabre 2 dr hard top. That car was awesome. A few years later, I bought a 1969 Chevy El Camino. And a couple years later, I bought a souped up 1972 El Camino hot rod.
All those cars had bench seats. They were great for young couples in love.
My girlfriends always sat right next to me and snuggled up close. It was the coolest thing in the world to be seen with a girl sitting next to you, feeling her warm, soft body pressed against you, and smelling her fresh scent.
You could go places together or just cruise around. Certain boulevards were popular for cruising and socializing on Friday and Saturday nights. You could pull into restaurants that had car hops. And drive-in movies were popular.
Yeah, a big car with a bench seat made it easier to park and have sex, too. It was convenient when you still lived at home. And BJs at drive-in movies were common.
I understand that bench seats are making a comeback in some models of new cars.
