That is not a fair question about average income because during depression! So was hard to get any job. People collected and sold rags!
Still that shows the harm when dumb democrat truman ignored even his own democrat financial adviser about gold standard... we see the major damage.
Also notable a house cost around 3 years salary but now a house is far more years of salary! showing a major problem.
In 1938 the cost of living may have been lower however the average salary was about $515.00 a year & things were still cheaper & people saved. Nowadays the cost of living compared to what people are making is ridiculous & nowadays people don’t save.
I've never once considered the cost of living from the 1930s.
I bet the word "inflation" hadn't been a word in 1938!

We are far richer today. Everything is better. My parents grew up without indoor plumbing or electricity.
Well, seeing how the average person made 35 dollars a week it is tough.
Still in one week salary, enough for rent for a month in an apartment , seems good.
Life was so much better back in the 1938.
