Many news articles are behind a paywall, with most of the major news media companies requiring a subscription to get through the paywall and access their news. Studies show that most people don't pay when they encounter a paywall.

Per a recent Pew survey, here’s how US readers typically react when they come across a paywalled article:

* 53% look for the info somewhere else
* 32% give up
* 11% try to access the article without paying
* 2% do something else
* 1% actually pay

I’m definitely not going to pay someone to lie to me. Save possibly a call girl. Even then it depends on how far over the top she takes it.
The internet is a boundless source of information, good and bad. It’s very difficult to differentiate them until you’ve accessed multiple resources. So i’m not going to pay for “news” when there’s a minimum 66% chance that they’re lying or at least cherry picking the tidbits of truth that suit some predetermined narrative.
I pay for fiction when it’s entertaining, not when it’s meant to deceive and manipulate.

As soon as I see a paywall, I'm outta there. Window closed. Moving on.

The stupid thing about paywalls is that a person would end up with 50 subscriptions. No rational person is gonna do that. The content on any given site is just too limited in scope and volume. Subscriptions worked for newspapers back in the day but they delivered everything from politics and weather to obituaries and sports. And they also sold ad space.

It just doesn't work on the internet. Advertising is the only successful model on the internet, like it or not.

I usually don't bother, since the 4 medias I use the most - usually cover what I care about and it's very likely I've already read about it.

There's one local news outlet, that is subscription based that will at times make articles that I'll pay to access. These are usually about the condition of our handicap/psychiatric "system" in my region and policies that effects my field of work.

Don't see the point. You can easily get the story elsewhere and if you can't it probably wasn't news.

I watch Enforcer News. It's free to watch but they take super chats because it's how they fund most of the channel to avoid biases and being controlled by people who pay the bills. It's one of the very few news sources I watch that I have trust in so I donate. Plus they read all super chats they get so you actively get to interact with them when you donate so you can ask them questions as an audience member.

my browser goes automatically into "speedreader" mode... this, to avoid ads, and can also work through paywalls

and it if doesn't... most "pay to read articles" can be right-clicked and google searched and other sites have it copy-pasted and ready to go

GaG actually shows me what people are busy with thinking about.

Most of 'the News' is insignificant stuff. And so - only every now and then I might follow up some detail. But to pay for receiving a most likely ''filtered'' report? - come ON! ... I'm too smart for that shit. News in my eyes are public property. And I know where to get it from - for free.

I have a subscription to the local newspaper (which gets me access to a few other regional newspapers as well) and a subscription to one national newspaper. Paywall sucks on the rest but if its a big story there will be free sources in addition to the ones I subscribe to, plus commentary on twitter and reddit to fill in some gaps (all verified after reading of course).

I try to get around d the paywall. The pla e where I work has subscriptions to some newspapers but since it is a state college they are all fake news.

I see a pay wall, notice the website name, such as new york times to never waste time going again, and immediately tap the BACK button to exit it.

I blacklist sites that try to block me with pop-ups.
It doesn't even have to be a paywall. I refuse to consent to tracking cookies either and blacklist sites that refuse to allow me to view without accepting cookies.
