In my early 20s, I built my own 4th of July rockets.

I taped two D5-0 model rocket engines side by side to a long wooden dowel. Then I taped two more together to a piece of drinking straw and slid the straw onto the dowel so that the tops of those engines rested against the bottoms of the engines on the dowel.

Those rocket engines have a plug in the top that is designed to pop off and blow the nose cone of a model rocket off when it reaches the top. I dug the plugs out so that, instead of popping off, flame would shoot out.

The engines on the straw were the first stage of the rocket. Then they got to the top, flames shot out of the tops, lit the engines of the second stage, and then slipped off of the dowel. The second stage would continue to ascend.

To the second stage, I taped all kinds of fireworks - spinning ground flowers, the inner core of piccolo Petes, M-80s, firecrackers. Or I would tape short pieces of drinking straws into which I could slide 3 bottle rockets into each so that there were as many as 24 bottle rockets on the payload.

I stuffed the fuses of all the fireworks into the tops of the rocket engines so that, when they reached the top, the engines would light the fuses.
At that point, the fireworks would detach and rain down, or the bottle rockets would fire off.

I put so many fireworks on that the rockets were top heavy and spiraled upward, sometimes looking like they would crash back to earth. And when the payload finally went off, screaming piccolo Petes, spinning ground flowers, exploding M-80s, firecrackers and bottle rockets rained down on onlookers like shock and awe. It's hard to describe.

Friends of mine saw my inventions and built their own.

One 4th of July, we took them to a festival in a parking lot near the ocean where there was going to be a laser light show and fireworks. The huge parking lot was packed with cars and people.
People tripped out when our fireworks unleashed holy hell. But no harm was done, thank goodness.

Looking back on that, it was insane. We were young and stupid. LOL

Well, my most recent involved me being catapulted off the side of my mountain while asleep as a passenger only to be awaken by EMS prying my door open and loading me on a gurney. It was a short by tumbling flight I was told. Still healing but any crash you can walk away from in one piece…

That was my second flip and roll accident as a passenger in less than a year. Good times.
