How often do you pause to look up at the sky?

I'm odd. I keep track of the summer and winter solstice. The vernal and autumnal equinox. The Perseid and Geminid meteor showers. So yeah I pay attention to the night sky. Unfortunately where I live now there is a lot of light pollution and cloud cover much of the time. That's one of the reasons I like to go to remote areas and climb mountains and sleep under the stars.

LOL, not under the stairs. I'm not paranoid about a home invasion. But yeah, it's nice to fall asleep on top of a mountain far from any light pollution looking up at the night sky.

Agreed. I do that a lot during the summer months when the night sky is really clear and I can see all the constellations.

Here, it's nice at altitudes above the tree line. Bears and other critters don't go up that high because there's nothing up there for them. So, no predators to worry about. And there's no mosquitoes or other bugs at that altitude. So having the rain fly off the tent or just sleeping on the ground outside without pitching a tent is pretty comfy and the sky is much clearer / darker.

I gather this is something you have done very recently?

No, not recently. Since about age 15. Also had a lake house in a remote area for a several years. I used to take the boat out at night and cut the engine and just drift looking up at the stars. I get up to the mountains less these days. I live further away.

What a lovely thing to do!! Was it a form of escapism? Or was it something you just really loved doing?

I've always been amazed by the scope and grandeur of the universe. "Awesome" is an overused / misused word these days. But looking up at the night sky, awesome is the right word.

The boat thing was just enjoying the free show and a glass of wine. Floating on water. Looking up at the cosmos. Almost zero noise. Much better than watching TV. The conversation tends to get deep in that setting.

When I'm walking alone on nature trails, all the damn time. I get lost in thought so often. And looking at the sky always makes me think of how small and insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things. Kinda helps make my worries go away knowing that probably none of what we do matters at the end of the day.

Actually, in thinking about it, I also have to note that I do this a lot when I'm about to go sailing or when I'm about to go flying. I particularly do it when I'm sailing or flying because these are times when the weather and weather changes are very critical for my survival. Flying a small plane is not a joke, and sailing a small boat is also not a joke, and you can get killed if you are careless.
