Maybe a little too good, I can see why people would find my blunt tone unacceptable and insensitive.

For instance, if I was a doctor with a cancer patient, let's just say their chemo failed, tumors grew and there's nothing left but fever dream clinical trials which they'll be dead before they can even apply to.

I wouldn't have been that brutal with my delivery, but I'd almost certainly tell them exactly how long they have to live, and encourage them to not spend their last days in a clinical trial which they'll be dead before it starts.

I can see why this is unbelievably unacceptable by many to be this blunt but I'd tell them their time frame because I believe in this hypothetical situation, not telling them is to torture them with false hope.

It would make them waste their last few days chasing a fantasy just to devastated when the cancer starts to deliver the killing blow.

I definitely need to work on this, I can imagine a million situations I'd make so much worse by being too honest, too fast and in a way that's totally improper

LOL, maybe too comfortable. I have a friend I'm guiding through a tough career situation. I've been drilling a philosophy into his head.

"Confront a difficult personality first time every time. Never let a moment of disrespect, bad behavior, or a lie pass without confronting it."

If you do that EVERY TIME, it establishes boundaries from the beginning and doesn't allow bad patterns in relationships to become established.

• The assholes in life need consequences to understand boundaries. Ouch that hurts. Ouch that hurts. Eventually they learn.
• The people who are not assholes will ultimately thank you for having the guts to have that conversation with them.

I try to be as thoughtful and honest as possible.

Delivering uncomfortable truths is a balance , you want to be clear without being hurtful, direct without being harsh.

The key is timing, empathy, and framing: making sure the other person can receive it, while still standing by the truth you need to communicate.

I am okay at it. I try to cushion it for most things (too many people take pride at being brutally honest when it is just them being nasty) but sometimes there is no good way of saying something so you have to just say it (for ex someone passed away, are in the hospital, etc).
