Ok... "technically" yes they do, because that measurement is taken from the nostril to the end of the beak. Kiwi's are unique because their nostrils are positioned at the end of the beak, not at the base on their face.

As you're no doubt well aware because you're a native New Zealander, most of use didn't know this about them! I learned when I visited, and it's because they use their long beaks to burrow into the soil where they can smell insects and prey as deep as 2 meters!! Fascinating birds, completely nocturnal too, I believe?

I didn't know that about the Maori alphabet. I DID get to see some kiwi at the Kiwi Park in Queenstown. Fascinating bird show too.

? They have quite a long beak. They do have very small vistigal wings though.

I kinda think they are pretty ordinary but I spare my Trans Tasman cousins feelings on this matter. Kiwis take offense if you belittle their iconic bird.

I think of a lot of animals as being cute, but I don't feel like that about any birds. Toucans look cool, but that's still different than cute, but kiwis don't look that interesting to me even by my different standard for birds.
