Miami Zoo have encounters with a Kiwi an endangered NZ species, what do you think?

Videos have surfaced about a behind the scenes encounter taking place at Miami Zoo with the endangered Kiwi bird. This nocturnal bird is being pet by strangers for just $25 including on their face, beak and whiskers (which are very sensitive) while under bright fluorescent lighting. There's even a video of the caretaker and guests laughing as the lone Kiwi runs into a box to hide from the light. You can even in one of the videos hear the caretaker say "some places keep them in the dark which isn't good", these people are clearly misinformed on how to care of Kiwis correctly.

Zoo Miami is no longer going to be holding the encounter with the Kiwi because of the backlash."The concerns expressed have been taken very seriously and as a result, effective immediately, the Kiwi Encounter will no longer be offered. It is especially painful to all of us to think that anything that has occurred with Paora here at Zoo Miami would be offensive to any of the wonderful people of New Zealand. Again, we are deeply sorry."

What zoo in Miami? The Miami Metro Zoo? CUse I used to go there when I was younger and I know Miami foul but damn even the zoo smh

Wasn't on the news, I saw it on TikTok by the person who created the petition. Hopefully it will gain news attention so we can get the kiwi to somewhere safer.

They should just close down that zoo, if they did this to one animal what they do to the rest when they are away from cameras or behind closed doors

Yeah the fact that in the article about them being given the kiwi it says "The birds themselves were cared for according to best practice, which means the public had few opportunities to view them." And now they're literally charging a piddly $25 for people to touch them

Sounds like a greedy miami tactic, I believe it completely, they should transfer it to the Miami metro zoo, it's a much bigger and more legit zoo

Not incredible. They have stopped the experience due to backlash from NZ people. It was not an appropriate way to handle a Kiwi

Would it not be better to repair their own natural and original living space instead of using them as an alibi of ''humane-ness''?

That is happening. The issue is Kiwis are very vulnerable to pests. But the process to eradicate pests can also kill birds.
