i love them if they are well-maintained and provide enrichment for the animals and whatever. If you live back east and have seen a snow leopard at the zoo, you're welcome. There's a good chance that it was bred at my local zoo and sent there--with their extensive breeding program.
How do you think children learn about these different animals and develop feelings about their species? Not from just reading about them in a book. It's the childhood trips to the zoos that spawn conservation and study interests in children's minds. And it's the individual experiences children have with different animals, that spark a love and interest in different ones. A "cute" interaction with a baby bear or wolf at the zoo, might lead to a life-long study of those animals by that child--that would have never happened without the face-to-face meeting.
The people crapping on zoos don't even realize they're telling you that these animals should be extinct, rather than exist in zoos, because that would have been the fate of many of our most beloved animals without the help and intervention of zoos to help save the species.
Such a wide range. I went to a really shite one in TN one time, but the Ashville zoo in NC has the largest open air savannah exhibit in the western hemisphere or something. You need binoculars to see the elephants most of the time, and they very actively engage in conservation efforts that work to increase the wild population of the various animals.
The ones that are critters locked in jail cells that we couldn't even put prisoners in are garbage though.
I talked to an elephant trainer in Thailand. He said that the elephants really like their habitat because it’s safe. But in exchange for this safe environment, being in captivity shaves about 30 years off their life.
I told him that doesn't make sense to me. He told me that elephants need “exactly food” and only elephants know exactly what they need. I'm not talking about their day-to-day diets. The jungle provides a large pharmacy for the elephants. When an elephant is sick only the elephant knows exactly what it needs to find to make it better.
habitat has both meaning, which do they like? jungle habitat or habitat in zoo?
@strateguy632
It's not really a zoo. It's more of a sanctuary. They have lots of space and some do jobs and some perform. But they like their lives in captivity.
Those are quite big. This is the smallest I could find on YT and even that’s pretty large, considering the woods behind them.

I feel bad for the animals tbh
good so protect them in zoo instead of getting eaten in wild. if care.

Without zoos a lot of animals would be extinct by now. Animals breed in zoos and are safe from hunters or poachers.
At least a cheetah doesn't get them because he's locked up in the next cage. The Gazelle tease him and laugh at him. They have to keep moving in the wild as they have a lot of animals wanting a piece of them.
You mentioned in another post you see I see gazelles just lying on the ground, whereas they are usually moving in the wild. Know why that is?

Most animals live longer in captivity than in the wild. Zoo animals are kept safer, have a reliable source of food, and unlike their wild counterparts, their health is monitored and managed by experts who can treat them and help prevent illness.
The wild is a dangerous place for most animals. Animals in captivity don't have freedom, but it sounds like a fair tradeoff to me.

I don't like it, especially for large animals. Feel bad for the large cats in small container spaces... need standards of large open space or turn em loose. I'm in favor setting up large zones where they roam. where I live we have open zoos of coyotes, bears, fox, turkey, deer. generally not a problem.
If a zoo is well kept and the amimals have enough room to roam i am ok with zoos. Some zoos should be shutdown or at least updated for the sake of the animals. Many zoo animals were born in captivity and would never survive in the wild.
Lets be honest… in a sense… aren't we all in a cage? I think about the 70-80 hours a week i work and find it hard to feel bad for zoo animals ( As i look out my 20x36 inch window to the outside world).
the zoo are experts they know what is "enough".
Many years ago in NJ there was a place called Jungle Habitat. They were not treating the animals well and when they went out of business they let their animal escape. Yes there were teams of people looking for big cats and other animals in the hills of ringwood NJ.
All places are not experts unfortunately.
After 4 or 5 trips to Africa my view on zoos have changed, the way things are going there with the industrial mining and whatnot, the zoo might be the only ways for the animals to survive extinction. I'm generally pro Zoo if they are treated right.
That also being said it really depends on the animals, for example for a lion the deal sucks, but if you are one of the weaker animals, it's a pretty good life for you.
lions also get hunted... by us! need preserve some in zoos plus promote hunting dangerous carnivores.
and even not in risk of extinction have a bird-arium where they can fly and we can see. if i can have a PET bird in a cage at home, zoo cage is bigger!!
Zoos make me sick. Poor animals! Just for humans to bring their spawns to entertain them. And people say they protect them from extinction make no sense. So it's better to be stressed out at a zoo daily than have a chance to live free? Humans are the biggest problem to this beautiful planet. Always about being selfish and greedy.
the word "just" is your error. not just for fun, but fun and get care by zoo staff. many species got extinct in last 50 years, could've saved some in zoos. many in threat of extinct but you say no zoo, let 'em die like the EIGHTY 80 extinct mammals and OTHERS.
@strateguy632 Sanctuaries yes! Zoos no!
I support Free Range zoos, like the NC zoo near Charlotte.
There are also preserves dedicated to breeding endangered animals and re-introducing them. I've seen White Rhinos (unchained and tame as oxen with cars nearby) and Cheetahs (which I support). Wild animals, even Lions, can become familiar with visitors and ignore them. Just don't get out of your car.
Depends on the zoo I guess. For animals that have been injured or for any reason can never return to the wild, sure. Also if it’s a really good zoo and the animals do have sufficient space, enrichment, food etc I don’t see why not. But I see too many bad and run down zoo, and usually not enough space for the animals.
what is considered "enough?" they can pace a ten foot square.
@strateguy632 sounds like a jail cell
It’s complicated. Probably a necessary evil. Appreciate when they support conservation and education over entertainment and spectacle. I mean, how many kids will ever have the chance to visit Asia or Africa to see an endangered animal in the wild. And if not, how else will they care?
think like this
in the wild they are always in danger, even the most basic needs are not fullfilled
why let them suffer like that? as long as the zoos keep them happy and safe i don't see why not.
it'd only be good for animals and research if it was a conservation, zoos and aquariums just keep animals in for entertainment - obviously they may be safer in zoos but i doubt they're happier
better sad then dead.
i add even those species not near extinction, those in zooos are safe and get care.
@strateguy632 can’t say I disagree. But they’d be better off in habitat.
Ideally animals should not be kept in zoos but it is necessary for some of the species survival.
all get hunted by other animals and by... us.
it protects animals from each other and from hunters. free they will die. so we won't see them need zoos for see and preserve.
i heard in india tigers and elephants kill people, there needs zoo keep a pair, and hunt the rest dead.
I don't like them for caging animals when they should be free. Animals should not be experimented with. How would you like to be caged and look at by animals?
It may be "good" for researchers and recovering animals but I believe captivity of a healthy & capable animal is unfair and, worse, inhumane.
actualy inhumane to free it where it will get hunted, by humans and carnivores
I think the minimum welfare standards need to be a lot higher. Some like Chester zoo are pretty good but some of the smaller ones are appalling.
A Zoo is a good place for animals. They are well cared for and get 3 hots and a cot. They are educational for people as well
yes they get cared by people who know about animals. zoo is better.
Zoos are good for keeping many animal species safe.. Nature is kinda cutthroat and not as accommodating as many people like to make it seem.. Human activity has saved many animal species..
LOL, now you're opposed to zoos? You do know that they are heavily involved in conservation efforts, right?
Zoos keep a lot of rare animals about to go extinct alive.
Mixed feelings. You are caging wild animals for human entertainment. But you are also protecting that species from extinction by poachers.
not just caging, but get care in zoo
They're getting better, so much better than a few decades ago, at least in western Europe.
I like visiting the zoo but it’s been years, gives you a chance to see animals you’ll never see
Yeah but they live longer in captivity but they lose their freedom, seems like the only way we can see them without them trying to kill us unfortunately
Depends on the individual zoo. Some are good, some are not. I do think they are good if they are able to keep endangered species alive.
It's good for animal species that are becoming extinct
I think it's time to get rid of them and set them poor things free
I love animals, that is why I HATE Zoos.
if you love them, what about 80 eighty extinct mammals species? promote protecting in zoo.
@strateguy632 If it was done by mother nature, that is the way it suppose to be, because eventually mother nature always balancing her self out. She was here before us she will be here after us. If it was done by humans, well humans are humans what can I say.
I’ve never been to one.
A very nice place to visit
Very nice places everyone needs to go
They should be closed! Animal prison!
Zoos smell funny.
Not everything needs change lefty
They're fine.
How could you tell? Did they say as much to you?
I think you're projecting your own feels onto the animals.
On average, zebras live for approximately 20 years in the wild, and up to 40 years in zoos. Just sayin.
I love them
Love it.
