Many people do with nicknames and using their middle name and outright changing their names when they really want it or need to for some reason. Most people use some version of the name of their birth certificate they have become endeared to by family and friends over the years.

I hate these days where you call someone about something official such as a doctor's appointment or DMV records or something and they say, “what is your name?” and you say something like, “Barb Smith” and then they claim to not be able to find you and after exhaustively and exasperatedly searching they finally collapse and say, “is it Barbara Smith?” as if it's the biggest surprise in the world. Not to mention dealing with thousands of people every day, so obviously Barb is Barbara and Bob is Robert and on and on.

I'm not in love with my first name but at least it's not common. Better than John, Mike, Tom, Dave, Steve, Bill, Jim. Easy for people to remember.
