Were you already familiar with the Irish slang term ‘good craic’?

I was at Morgan Wallen’s bar in Nashville last weekend and met these three very beautiful Irish gals, who I think were some kind of promotional models working their way through the U. S., or something like that.

I bought them a round, and we were dancing and jumping around to the cover band’s music. I go into “life of the party” mode in those situations, haha.

Anyway, one of them leans in and says in my ear, in her brogue: “Steve, in Ireland, we’d say ‘you’re good craic.’” It’s pronounced like “crack”, so she had to explain, but apparently it means I’m a fun time? Lmao, I think that’s my new favorite compliment I’ve been given of all time😝

I’ve never heard of it, but I told my lady and another friend of mine, and they both had heard of it. Were you aware of this term?

It's well known throughout the UK it's actually from the German kraken to make a cracking sound. You'll hear stuff like

Cracking cheese Gromit
What's the crack?
We had a cracking time
He's a cracking lad
She's got a cracking pair of tits

Irish just changes it to craic because there's no k in irish

People say craic originated as part of a catchphrase in a irish chat show but given crack has been used for ages in North England and Scotland, both places with a lot of irish it's more likely been in common usage for centuries

No I only prefer Northern Ireland / Belfast etc.

I'll watch the Disney movie before the separation called Derby O'Gill / Darby O'Gill whatever it's spelt, that movie, the coach, etc.

But personally I'm not into the Republic - King and Country and God are more my jam 👑 🇬🇧

Actually I have heard of this before. I read an article in a magazine about Ireland and the author mentioned this but did not make a distinction between Crack and Craic.

It's a variation on the general theme of craic, or "crack" as we say in England. I used to bamboozle my late father by greeting him with "What's the crack?"
