Today i learned that house centipedes are born with eight legs and they acquire a new set every time they molt. I find that fascinating and i’m actually shocked that i didn’t already know this.

I am recently back from a transatlantic trip to Africa & Europe and learned a lot. I now know the geographic location of the city Tangier Morocco since I visited it. I learned that casbah (kasbah) simply means fortified city quarter or walled portion of the city for defense.

I visited Malaga Spain and learned it is the birthplace of Picasso. I also visited Alicante which must mean nice but boring.

I also learned that the McDonald’s in the Barcelona airport is the worst by far in my global search. Don’t even consider the sour cream French Fries which is a powder you dump on the fires and shake in the bag. Horrendous. Buenos Aires Argentina airport still holds 1st place in worldwide McDonald’s quality and taste.

Oh gosh, I am sure there are many things I have learned since then but nothing as interesting as when I learned about the mantis shrimp.

For example, dogs have 2 color receptors, humans have 3 (red blue green), mantis shrimp have 16!

Their claws are so durable that not only can they shatter aquarium glass, but they move so fast that they boil the water around them. Their strikes can move as fast as 50 mph, underwater. This is like the speed and power of a.22 caliber rifle bullet from a thing no bigger than 5 inches long.

Add in the fact that scientists are using mantis shrimp shell research to make better body armor says a lot about them.

Being a student, I learn new things every single day of the week, that is Monday to Friday, when I am in class.

The last thing I learned on Friday was using stellar spectra to illustrate thermal radiation laws. That topic totally eluded me and I have to study in the evenings to even try to understand the bare minimum.

On a more down to earth topic, the last thing I learned that mushrooms have root-like networks called mycelium and that the largest such network is over 3.5 square miles large and found in Oregon.

So many interesting facts that just need to be discovered.

This hotel I often walk past has a worn stone bust of a horse above the door. The horse was a famous racehorse called Trayles from the late 1800 owned by a wealthy eccentric called De la Rue. Suffering from gentleman's disease and depression he committed suicide.

There was a Finnish soldier in the winter war that while he and his squad were skiing to a new position, he accidentally took so much pervitin (german made meth) due to panic, he skiid 250 miles non stop in the wrong direction, hallucinated several times and eventually got back with his squad.
