A lion. The current one is not Egyptian, as it's clearly sub-Saharan African. But it is most likely thousands of years older than 2500 BC, so the erosion would wear down the head to something closer to its current size.

What erosion? Egypt has a dry climate. At least now it does.

Without human intervention, for the last 9,000 years or so, while Egypt has been hot and dry the enclosure the Sphinx is in fills up with sand and preserves it. But the head sticks up and is exposed to the erosion of wind and sand.

The weird thing is there is heavy water erosion on the walls of the enclosure around the sphinx, but there wasn't every rain there since 7000+ BC

There must have been or the Nile would not be there and the stones that built the pyramids could not have been transported on it. But since we can't go back in time, no one knows for sure what happened.

Yeah, the Nile has been there for millions of years, I think. So that's not really something we have questions about.

I forgot what the researcher's name was right off - "Shockley" maybe? His assertions was that it wasn't wind that caused the erosion, but water.
