What does it usually mean when a girl paints her finger nails black?

It has to mean something if girls feel the need to do it, especially black of all colors. I've seen a fair amount of young women do it in high school and college, and no they're not goth or anything crazy like that lol. What does it say about them and who they hang out with do you think, or do you think that has any effect at all?

I've painted my nails black before for several reasons:

1. part of a fancy dress costume

2. it matched my outfit

3. I was at my friend's place and we decided to paint our nails

4. I felt like it

There is no one size fits all. I'm pretty sure there will be some girls out there who paint their nails black to try and convey their emotional state, to feel like they're rebelling, to impress a boy/girl/group of people, or to convey a certain image of themselves.

But then again, maybe it's a mark of a super secret girl society that nobody talks about...

They like the look...may care what it makes them seem like--mysterious, dark, more serious, sophisticated. It depends. Some girls do things just to try it or it looks good on someone else. Some feel it's the way they want to be perceived. You can ask girls why they do or ask them to describe their personalities or their favorite things---you may find out why for that girl in particular.

Black nails have been in fashion for a while now. It's like I use the color pink a lot but in different shades. It doesn't mean anything, I just like pink on my nails. I never use dark colors simply because they don't suit me. I wish I could pull off a black color on my nails but it makes me look a bit sick if I use black :')

I think it's like rings all over, just a way to get attention. But I do think it's part of goth style. That doesn't mean others won't use that color.

Why I do it: It matches everything, I like wearing black on my nails, It matched what I was wearing (ex. my prom dress was black, so I wore black nail polish), it's pretty and shiny.

Long story short it doesn't say anything, black lip stick says something though.

Nothing. My mom has black nail polish on right now, she just saw it at the nail salon and wanted it...I paint my nails pink a lot but it doesn't mean I'm happy and bubbly and smiley all the time while I have it on my nails, I just like the way pink looks.

I wear black sometimes and truthfully I just like the way it looks! I can't elaborate much on that because it's personal taste :) Just like some like the color orange or some like the color yellow. You just like something more than another.

Personally I see it as a slight rebellious streak. Its to get a point across, maybe they are going through rough or dark times.

That would potentially be a reason I'd go for black.

I think it's more of a 'going against the grain' type thing.. black isn't a very flattering nail color (ie visually shortens the look of nails) and it had always been the 'color' of outcasts and goths... so if it is a usually colorful and happy person who has gone to black nails them maybe it is their way of feeling a little like a rebel.

I've never done it but will at some point. been planning on rounding out my nail polish shades. It's just a color. I'm totally square. I've never even ever had a drink in my life.

i mean im currently typing this with black painted finger nails and personally I guess you could say im going through this whole rebellious phase as in "hanging with the wrong crowd", always sneaking out and doing stuff I usually wouldn't and I don't know i guess painting my nails black kinda just tops it all off for me because no one else I know personally does it.

Nah, mostly older women have to be more "subdued" with their polish/hair color/etc because of their jobs. So if they do paint their nails, it's a common color. Their toenails are still black or neon or leopard print sometimes, if they wear closed toe shoes!
