Trending & News I'm English and can confirm that the trench coat isn't really a popular choice for men in the UK. That said, they do have their followers and I can't really think why they'd be considered creepy - but I'm not viewing it from within your cultural context. Personally I think a trench coat can look very stylish on men and women alike. If it was authentic Burberry and that was obviously - well, it's a very expensive piece of clothing, if it was more of a low-key event, it might have come off as excessively flashy.
The most popular over-suit coat in Britain isss... nothing. Here in the UK we're getting rained on 90% of the time we're outside, so I think we just get used to it and typically opt to brave it.. in extreme cases might rock an umbrella.
In winter most men wear a smart black or grey wool coat with a suit, such as this link and longer versions of the same.
P.S. The other possibility is that British people in general are considered creepy in your country of origin, thus modelling your style on a British one is where you went wrong. *Tries to look as uncreepy as possible*
In seattle we celebrate the annual "Rain Festival" from Jan 1st to Dec 31st. Nobody carries umbrella's around here, either. The event was a formal occasion so I thought I'd dig out my trench.
whenever I see a man wearing that I assume he works for wall street or is in the government with a high paying job and he's high class and would never look twice at me
basically they seem intimidating and arrogant and if you're on the hunt for a girlfriend it may scare her off
lol. I was actually on a date with a girl while wearing the suit and jacket and going to a formal venue. She said it looked nice; but other friends later commented that it looked creepy.
A bit unnecessary here in Texas, haha! Otherwise, I have no opinion about them really.
Wearing a trenchcoat outside when its rainy is fairly normal in areas where people wear suits.
Where exactly were you wearing this trenchcoat?
I know trenchcoats are also popular with flashers, but if your friends know more flashers then well dressed people in trenchcoats, that says more about their social and professional circle then anything else.
You bring up an interesting point. Come to think of it, all the people who made these remarks are my age, unemployed and living at home.
"I like to model much of my formal dress attire after British themes."

There's only one who can pull it off, and that's because he is the one. link

You only wear an overcoat with a suit. A peacoat like Daniel Craig wear in 007 Skyfall is ideal for casual wear. I wear an overcoat, but I also wear a suit to work everyday. An overcoat in jeans, eeehh, could be a little creepy.
It's a really cool outfit. I always wanted to have one though I don't still have the money for it.
Depends on how you wear it and how it fits. If it's a shorter one or you wear it buttoned up it looks a lot less creepy.
it's a much longer jacket. I always thought the shiny leather ones were creepy. Burberry has always been the prime clothing line for all things trench/rain coat and I was surprised to get some awkward comments from people. Must not be a thing in the US!
I also think they look nicer when worn with scarves. But yeah, I don't see as many people wearing them in the U.S. as I do in other countries.
i do usually wear a matching scarf while wearing it :D
I can't say for the UK but in America you'll look like your about to embark on a school shooting.
LOL. I got that comment, too. I was also told I looked like Fox Mulder from the X-files or Inspector Gadget.
well I was thinking more along the lines of the columbine school shooting. don't know if you're familiar with that but the shooters liked to wear trench coats.
I know they did. But the style was more akin to something from the Matrix. My trench jacket doesn't look anything similar but apparently people still draw that connection.
I think you're confusing a traditional tan trenchcoat with a black one.
Trench coats look awesome in my opinion.
