The guy was talking, laughing, the conversation was going really well between us and a friend, and I looked at him and he winked.

it may have some meaning his gesture? Was he flirting or something?

It depends on the person and the context. A guy I work with has a habit of winking at people when he speaks to them. It may be cultural as he is not American, but its something that he just does without thinking and it has been offputting to some of the girls in the office as they connect the same connotation. For the most part when people wink at me I take it to be a sign that they're about to spout some bullsh*t and don't want me to be taken in by it. Though that's mostly when other guys do it.

A wink could mean anything, depending on the context.

If a friend of mine is fooling someone with a BS-story and winks at me when I enter the conversation that wink means: "dude I'm fooling him right now, please play along with it"

But considering the context you put it in it might very well mean he's into you, I mean I can't recall myself ever winking at a girl for any other reason.

I wink sometimes, even to little kids. I don't think it has to necessarily mean he's into you, some people are just playful/friendly like that. I think it's cute. :)

Most of the time it does, because there's given effort.

But a wink doesn't denote a flirt or friendship. It could simply be used for inside jokes, or friendly gestures, or even a compliment.

With a good friend or colleague, it might come as a simple non-suggestive gesture. With a stranger, it might mean more.
