Why do guys clear their throats when they see a hot girl?

It's kind of a pointless question, but I'm curious to details. Clear their throat OR just cough...do they do it because they want the girl to notice them? and they do it when they are alone, not just with friends. I've been noticing this a lot lately.

Nerves presumably. Makes your mouth dry and you have to swallow hard to talk, which probably makes the guy cough as well. Or maybe they're afraid their voice will crack or sound weak. Nerves give you the sensation of a lump in your throat, after all.

No? I've never known a guy to do that, nor have I done it myself... I mean guys aren't really subtle like that, I know guys who shout compliments out to a girl or do some sort of gay muscle flexing at her... But nothing like cough.

I'd definitely notice if I did that, I mean I'm generally so nervous I pick up on everything I do... I'm completely quiet and twitchy, or I just talk wayyy too much. If I see a random girl in the street all I'll do is look. I genuinely can't cough or pretend to cough when I feel like it.
