A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS found that about one-third of Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults now identify as democratic socialists.

The poll also found that, among Democratic-aligned adults who do not personally identify as democratic socialists, 64% would be at least OK with the Democratic Party nominating one. Democratic-socialist candidates have also recently won several Democratic congressional nominations.

Do these results suggest that democratic socialism is becoming dangerously influential within the Democratic Party, or is its growing popularity not a serious concern?

Social democracy and democratic socialism have historical overlap, but they are not identical as defined in this poll.

Social democracy preserves a predominantly capitalist economy and private ownership while using democratic government, regulation, labor protections, public services, taxation, and a substantial social safety net. Oxford describes social-democratic capitalism as combining political democracy and capitalism with education, welfare programs, employment-supporting services, and market regulation.

Democratic socialism retains political democracy but seeks a larger transfer of economic ownership and control toward public, worker-owned, cooperative, or other collective institutions. The DSA explicitly says its vision goes further than historic social democracy and that capitalism should ultimately be replaced by democratic socialism.

Supporters of social democracy argue that it can preserve market competition while providing stronger social protections. Supporters of democratic socialism argue that political democracy is incomplete without greater democratic control of economic power.

Which system would be better for the United States?

Elon Musk’s America PAC reportedly plans to spend between $100 million and $120 million to increase Republican turnout in the 2026 midterm elections. The effort is expected to include door-to-door canvassing, digital advertising, and direct mail in competitive Senate and House races. Its immediate objective is to help Republicans retain control of Congress.

The reporting does not establish that Musk is doing this specifically to stop democratic socialists. However, stronger Republican turnout could also limit the political growth of the DSA, which openly organizes electoral campaigns to win power and endorses candidates whose platforms align with its political program and theory of power.

I support this effort. Republicans need a strong turnout operation to defend their congressional majorities and defeat Democratic and democratic-socialist candidates at the ballot box.

A Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that 55% of Americans would not consider voting for a democratic socialist for president, while 39% would consider it and 6% had no opinion. Among independents, 54% said they would rule out such a candidate. The poll surveyed 2,648 adults from July 8–13 and had a margin of error of ±1.9 percentage points.

Democratic-socialist candidates have recently gained influence in Democratic primaries, raising questions about whether that movement could remain popular within the Democratic base while struggling to attract a national majority.

The state instills certain symbols and values because, in times of crisis, it wants people to rally around those symbols like a flag. Those who do not conform are often excluded. For example, in France, a person who prays cannot become a police officer. In a way, this is also necessary for the sake of unity.

My girlfriend and I have been together a little less than 2 years, and she moved in with me about 4 months ago.

At HER suggestion, she cooks dinner and I clean up, because I work further away, work longer hours, so get home later. This way, we can have dinner when I get home, and she can relax while I clean up.

About a month ago, she changed jobs to a mostly work from home position; she just has to go into the office one morning a week.

The last few days, I've noticed a SUBSTANTIAL increase in the washing up to be done, well over twice as much as normal.

I mentioned this to her and she was all "Oh yeah, I've started making myself some elaborate breakfasts and lunches, it's great, so tasty and I feel healthier".

I told her she needs to start cleaning up after herself for breakfast and lunch, and she immediately fired up with "THAT WAS NOT WHAT WE AGRED! I COOK, YOU CLEAN!"

I told her I agreed to clean up the dinner dishes, as I was eating dinner, I'm not cleaning up after her breakfast and lunch.

As for the rest of the housework, it's split evenly, and I also do all the outdoor work (I enjoy it).

She's gotten really frosty since this, her defence is still "you agreed to clean up, it doesn't take much longer" (not true, it's taking a LOT longer because the dishes have sat there all day and the food is hardened), and we don't have space for a dishwasher.
