What he is referring to is the value of what he is the second you look at him. Its a way of determining how much a certain currency is worthy in the literal terms. He could also be referring to his physical traits, as in, you like him more than just for his looks, therefore literally referring to his "face value". It could honestly be either of the two.

Well we just starting to get to know each other.. n we had a bit of a argument.. and he didn't give up trying to make it better again... n despite the fact that I was hurt... i still spoke to him.. n didn't act messed up.. ignoring him... etc.. so that's what he said in the mid of our convo the next day

No he didn't start lyk that... he knew I was upset... but was still tawking to him... n he wanted to tawk about it sumhow to get it off his chest I think coz it was his mistake... Den he was lyk he knows he doesn't deserve me... but won't quit trying.. n he was feeling crap about that also... n den i sent a broken heart pic.. n den he was lyk he's gonna fix that... n den i said "positive that it will get fixed?"V... n he replied with that "deeper than face value phrase"

he's using fillers.. you guys are both playing the 'touch and go' game. You seem like the direct one, and he's insecure, so why don't you just assure him that you want him and him only and that yes, you take him "deeper than face value"
