If I remember correctly, a "waifu" is actually your spouse, though for us anime lovers and some otakus, the term "waifu" is merely used in place of the term boyfriend or girlfriend, nothing bad about it. But if he's already your boyfriend, this might be a marriage proposal. Maybe. Or he's just being a cute nerd expressing his feelings. Either way, it's nothing to worry about, he's expressing love for you and that's all that matters.

Lol it's pretty much a term of endearment used by otaku (anime lovers, although he doesn't necessarily have to be an anime nerd to use the term, it has gained popularity in much of the online community). He's probably trying to tell you he loves you =)

No it does not mean anime or video game wife. Otherwise he would not be saying it to a real live human being. It IS however used predominantly by people who are interested in anime and video games and is mostly used as a term of endearment.

@IronDr4gon I don't care what it means to the people who use it, I still dislike it greatly. I am aware that the term "Waifu" comes from Japanese origins, but the actual way of saying wife in Japanese is Tsuma.. So in general, its a bunch of Westerns trying to sound Japanese by saying "wife" in a butchered way, kind of like how an eastern Asian person with a strong accent would say it, which in my eyes, is really racist.

Thats why I dislike it, and I am not going to stop disliking it, sorry mate.

I see where you are coming from, although I find it to be a bit of a negative way of look at it when in reality, no foul has been committed. The Japanese have incorporated many English words into their language. As someone who has studied the language, I know for certain they intentionally put an emphasis on vowels in the English words they use simply because it makes the word easier to use in conjunction with Japanese words. The language is vowel heavy (Ka Ki Ke Ko Ku, Ra Ri Re Ro Ru, Ma Mi Me Mo Mu... you get the picture...)

I would not be surprised if the true origins of the term waifu came straight out of japan, although I cannot confirm nor deny this claim. Simply speculation. I truly don't think it is offensive though, rather, people are hyper sensitive and see racism where there is none. You really think "weeaboos" are racist against the Japanese? I highly doubt it. In fact I'd go as far as to say they admire them.

You say you "studied" the language, but you "wouldn't be surprised" if it was original Japanese origins? And even though you've studied the language, you Wikipedia it anyways? and yes I know, Urban Dictionary isn't a credible source, but you're trying to make Wikipedia a credible source after the fact, which is also an open community, anybody can edit the page on katakana, I just looked that up, so our sources are in the same boat.

Why not just pick a different word anyways, its not like the word waifu is the only word of affection in Japanese culture.
