The gender & age & relationship is left ambiguous it can be woman man whatever any age platonic or romantic familial etc I want to know what comes to mind on a gut level.

It's obviously an answer to a question. So the meaning depends on what was the question. Was it: "Will you run away with me?", "Will you leave your partner?", "Will you marry me?", "Will you please stop doing hard drugs and go to rehab?"
The answer implies some kind of conflict in the person's mind. It's like they are saying "I want to, but I just can't. And it's killing me." It's probably because of commitments like job, family, current partner or something like that. It could be based on some kind of fear like pregnancy, what does the future hold, or whatever.
Yeah it’s not the actual meaning I’m looking for —just what spontaneously it’s seem like if it was truncated. I think you covered a lot and I’d have similar assumptions lol
Yeah I’d prob interpret it that way and I’d probably be conveying that but I’d worry people take it as sexual. lol unfinished sentences aww often reduces to sexual connotation. Sometimes you just do how to finish a sentence too— that’s why the scene was so relatable to me although ironically in the movie, it was sexual lol
Someone scared of conflict, they don't want to give the real reasons why they can't because they don't want to 'hurt' the other person, though telling the truth is the less hurtful thing to do in many cases. And yeah then I would question to what extent they love the person. It is not unconditional, like most type of love.
That's a good question. I would think so, but straight males and females have certain evolutionary differences which lead in many ways to traditional gender roles.
I originally saw this in alibis and although in the movie it was mainly referring to romantic live esp sexual relations, I resonated deeply for me bc I often in trying to communicate with someone I care about I really just get stuck at I can’t. And wish I cousin just leave it at that but I know it’s just generate confusion plus I think as you say, ultimately “ I can’t” denotes not interested. No matter how you think you might feel once you say I can’t to ask own they will see that’s a the writing on the wall.
Well, I will simply say this: When he says "He can't", either: 1. He doesn't love you and knows it. 2. He doesn't know what loves is and is too immature about it. Bottom line: He doesn't love you.
It’s not to me it’s something I can Relate to saying to someone and I’m just wondering how it would sound if someone didn’t know what my inner dialogue was— I didn’t add gender bc I wasn’t really looking at this as a guy or girl thing. Which is why I asked you if you’d hear it differently if it was a woman saying it. I wouldn’t ask if you weren’t assuming it was to a woman. And I’m just curious I don’t mean this negatively. I just ask questions bc I like to understand where people are coming from 😊

Gut response is? It's the hobbit bedroom scene from lord of the rings that was cut. Remember when Sam comes in and give Frodo that very gay look. Then the scene was cut and Merry and Pippen entered. I always assumed it was Frodo's rejection of Sam and his inability to deal with his latent homosexual feelings towards Sam that drove him to leave with the elves to the undying lands. Is it just me?

Yeah I think so— but I wonder what they’d be trying to articulate. I think if it were me it’d just be I’d be saying I can’t x y z and then see the futility in it bc I can’t even expansion what I can’t— so yeah what you said lol at least for me lol
@VIVANT Tootsie was from before you were born! If you're a good pair then he'll wait until you CAN express yourself. Life isn't easy and few of us have the same perspective. Lol my great grand mother introduced me to it when I was 6 it’s been one of my favorites since. That and ‘brother from another planet’ ‘lone star’ & and ‘the front’, are all ties I think. Then I basically didn’t watch anything at all till a few years ago so, they are still my favorite movies 😂

Recently I’ve been listening to some life cos h usually I kind of turn away from that stuff but there are things in there about how you look at the exact same situation.. not just like I live myself I live the world etc but actual flip side of where you’re stuck but with logic & that appeals to me it’s kind of sticking.
