What is the relationship between looking at the moon and love and sadness?

I think first that the moon (just like beaches and sunrises and sunsets) has been linked and glorified with romance and love and sadness in popular media (movies, etc.) for a very long time. So we continue to see a visual connection made for us.

I think also, though, that the moon is visible mostly at night. It's a time when it is generally quieter. When we might be with our partner. Because of the dark and the quiet, there's an intimacy (not necessarily physical) that can come from the moon and its shining in the sky. And if we get all lovey dovey romantic during the moon, then when that romance or person is gone, there's sadness. Or if they're away from us and we see the moon, it's a memory, and we miss them.
