If $3500 turned up unexpectedly in my bank account I'd set it aside into one of my savings accounts, and when the Ex shows up asking for it back I'd say "Oh it was from you, what's your account number & sort code so I can transfer it back to you,".
It is not for me to run around to find out who put money into my account, especially if its an Ex.
