James Gunn once said you have to be ruthless in the first 20 minutes of a movie. It all has to move the story forward or it should be cut. He said he had some great jokes for Guardians of the Galaxy but cut them as they didn’t move the story forward.
I noticed some great movies drop you right into the action at the start of the movie. The movie is already in the thick of the story. Think Saving Private Ryan as one example. There was no 30 minutes of buildup and background, it was straight into a moving landing craft and the most expensive part of the movie to make.
I mentioned Guardians, boom he is right there at his mother’s deathbed which drives the whole series, he is abducted which also drives the series and he is then shown much older stealing the most important article of the movie and of Marvels movies. All within the first 15 minutes or so.
Last advice, the audience has to care about your characters. Sometimes we just don’t care. They have to be relatable and like-able at some level.
