Why some people openly cheat on their significant others?

I met this guy and he openly told me that he wants to have a side relationship with me. He has a girlfriend and obviously hopes she will never find out.
What causes people to act this way?

In the case of my relationship, we were both cheating. She had a boyfriend and I was fucking prostitutes. As it turns out, neither of us wanted to break up and neither of us wanted to stop cheating. It's been almost 10 years and we're still happening. We have our together sex life and our own private sex lives. We both like the arrangement and since we don't have kids together, it's no big deal.

I think this scenario makes more sense when the woman is the one cheating.

Because that's the way nature intended it to be. In the animal kingdom, the female often becomes impregnated by another male, even though she already has a mate.

@asker I think what @Billlewis is trying to say is that it’s not uncommon for a woman to marry a “safe man that’s a good provider” but wants to mate with the big strong bad guy…. Nature demands strong babies so they survive and this part of human nature is so deep in our primitive brain that most are unaware of it. @Billlewis you are forgetting that it’s also human nature for men to have sex with many women to spread his genes to as many offspring as possible.
