Guys, what would you do if your girl accused you of cheating when you weren't?

We're “close,” but we don’t hang out outside of work, and we don't really reach out to each other after hours. We’ve never had lunch together, don’t sit together at staff meetings, and mostly just vent about work. I've met his kids, but not his wife. One day, Chris came in acting distant, said he had a lot going on, and then called in sick for two days. When he came back, he was frustrated about being tired of lies and accusations but couldn’t tell me what was going on. He asked for space, which lasted about a week when he came to me upset about a coworker damaging one of the rooms he manages. That same day, right before clocking out, Chris' wife, Lisa, came up to me accusing me of following him around and being "creepy." I had no idea what she meant until I realized she was his wife. I apologized, and later found out from Chris' admin, Brit, that Lisa had been accusing us of having an affair for weeks. Brit had spoken to her and thought the issue was settled, but HR informed me there had been another incident. At a dinner with some higher-ups, Lisa pulled out a prepared speech accusing us of having an affair.

I’m still not sure why Chris didn’t directly address the situation with me, but he had been distant in the days leading up to the confrontation. I think he tried to create distance without saying anything, probably thinking it was the best way to avoid upsetting his wife while not making me worry. He’s not confrontational by nature. But I am curious to see how others would have handled this situation.
