Religions spread best to young impressionable minds, it's a lot harder to gain adult converts than it is to indoctrinate children. Plus those children grow up to be adults who fund the religion, hence why it's in religions best interest not only to keep people out of non-reproducing couples, but also to encourage followers to be pumping out as many babies as possible.
