i will start by saying its not just christians who say that, a lot of different groups who believe in god will say that
i won't bring my own faith into this ill just say what i know is taught at least in christianity and judaism
1. we have free will and a concious so we can make our own decisions, that causes suffering in the world because people can make the wrong decisions like with the original sin adam and eve and all that
2. the presence of Satan will encourage people to use their free will to commit wrong and act completely out of line in God's view
3. The fact that there will always be good and bad in the world, balence just has to happen and God doesn't always play a part in that

But obviously sometimes God can be to blame
1. If we commit wrong then God will punish us
2. God may be testing our faith in him like in the story of Job
3. God may cause suffering so we can learn and grow as people

yeah comparing god to a parent is a good example but that doesn't mean necessarily that he passed on evil qualities to us, those were caused by free will and creativity (in my opinion)
and i dont think god intended to do total genocide at all and instead wanted to have a meaningful sacrifice to give all the humans that come later a life without nearly as much sin, the flood was to give humanity a second chance

he didn't kill them because he wanted to, the torah teaches that he killed them to cleanse the earth of sin
as well as that i think there's something in the fact that god killed them with a flood rather than doing it directly which shows to me at least that he doesn't really want to hurt us
and God never kills for no reason
thats not at all even suggested in the torah
God takes life with reason but also it's God who gets to choose when we live and die
