My friend is one. She says they aren't; but it seems like they are a sect of Islam. So I am not sure how they aren't Muslim? Maybe it is a translation issue; where Muslims are like protestants and Islam is like Christianity. So the Alevi would be like the Orthodox church in this analogy.
