I know a lot of people who do religious things or claim religious positions that are toxic and cruel and do not believe in any of the kind and gentle teachings of the bible.

I had one guy kick me out of his bible study for saying I thought the references to torture and killing in the bible were metaphor because I do not believe a loving God would endorse that.

He was so offended by my comments about God being loving and compassionate that he kicked me out of his bible group.

The violence in the bible was probably real. Those were times when the lives of ordinary people was cheap and those with power would think nothing of killing and torturing. Even Moses in exodus orders his men to slaughter their own friends and family. In fact if you add up bible killings in the name of god it comes to about 3 million and thats not including the flood.

And nothings changed since biblical times, we've massacred thousands in the name of god in wars, inquisitions, witch trails etc. You don't have look far to find modern day examples of abuse by church figures. This pastors actions are just the result of the Christian mindset of how it's OK to abuse as long as you do it in the name of god.
