What do you think of the bible referring to the ones that went to John for baptism as a broad of vipers?

The bible says, "you brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance and do not think you can say to yourselves, 'we have Abraham as our father,' for I tell that that God is able out of these stones to produce children for Abraham. The axe is already at the root of the trees, therefore, every tree that does not bear good fruit is thrown down and cast into the fire."

I believe the verse means, that when you practice your religion in a way that tricks, misleads or harms others, your religion will not save you from the dangers you believe will come upon you. Also that God expects you to help others while accepting his authority, and also that your motives need to change, and you must be willing to help your neighbour and work on behalf of others, for their benefit, and not the benefit of your own pride and ego, or you will be punished for being a waste of time and emotions.
