Have you ever known somebody that was in a cult?

I had a cousin that was in a cult. For 4 years he travelled around he country selling flowers at airports. There were many cults active back then. The Hari Krishnas were probably the most famous but there were others. I remember one called the Process where they dressed in black. One of them used to follow me up the street begging for money. He was all in black and he looked like Dracula. After 4 years my cousin left the cult however he used to have a really funny look in his eyes and thirty five years later he still has that same look.

My dad told me my his brother was in a "Dungeon's and Dragon's" cult when he was young. I didn't know my uncle that well but he seemed normal the few times I met him.

we know a family... and one of them became a Christian, so that wasn't a big deal... a lot of people are Christians but this group in particular, was one of those that do like to condemn a lot of things and people

he started to go against his family, because they were not Christians... and soon after became sick, and his church people convinced him to refuse all and any medical help, and that Christ would save him, needless to say he died

after he died... his two siblings became that kind of Christian as well, a second sibling, also died of a similar disease but before that happened... both siblings, still living, where trying to take their mother's house so it would go to the church, but they didn't manage to do that

all properties and assets of the two siblings who died, ended up belonging to that church... the sibling who's still alive, gave up on that group and is back with the mother, and are often harassed by people of that church

that seems very cultish-like to me... but I'm not sure which "brand" or "branch" of Christians they are

Some people consider all religions a cult. I don't consider Christianity to be a cult, but there are cults within it. I knew several people who were caught up in a Christian cult. Christian cults take ideas from the Bible, twist them, and stretch them until they become dangerous. One example is the concept that if you don't hear the voice of God then you are not saved. Another example, you should be able to do more and greater miracles than Jesus. Yet another is, new testament prophets don't need to be 100 percent correct to be a true prophet. That is why today's Christian prophets get nothing right, and yet they keep on telling us the future, and keep getting it wrong.

Everyone knows someone who is or was in a cult. Military service is a cult by every standard of the definition. They isolate you from people who would advise you to not join. They spend months brainwashing you and then send you off to do things to hurt yourself and others for someone else’s benefit entirely. They mask it in “patriotism”, but it’s 100% textbook cult conditioning and behavior.

I had a wife who went gaga over anything that involved Asian mysticism, but it wasn't a cult. It was just a symptom of brain-dead group think (which I suspect is present in all cults.)

A primary school friend of mine has ended up in one of these strict Christian sects… Latter Day Saints or whatever. I find it weird because in school he had never shown any interest in religion at all.
