My ex/best friend sees it different from a soulmate and I agree. He said it can be platonic. But it's basically the other half of your own soul while a soulmate is separate from your own soul. They are just in your soul family.

We both were and still are under the influence (I'm high and he is drunk) though so this may not make much sense lol

But he doesn't believe in soulmates but believes in twin flames. And I think I do too. I think we are twin flames because we think so much alike now. It's insane.

Although my intuition tells me that its twin flame in the non literal sense, not a split soul but fulfilling the same role for someone who can't have that kind of split. Not with the goal of merging, but with the goal of being together for a long time, at minimum this life time.
