Do you think feeling needed makes the other person closer to you?

I have a male friend who I help a lot (small favours and a lot of help regarding school). It’s fair to say that I have more knowledge on the topics he’s studying because I have already taken those classes, so there is never an opportunity for him to help me. Although he offers it, I continuously remind him there isn’t really anything he can help me with. It’s annoying however, because sometimes I feel used, or at least that I am never getting anything in return (not like MONEY or something, just like time spent together hanging out). He’ll thank me and say he’ll buy me lunch or something, but he never does.

I’m curious if I started asking him for small favours in order for him to feel needed in our friendship, we would become closer friends. Kind of a strange thought.
