Boebert offers bill to repeal bipartisan gun control measures

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) has introduced a bill to repeal bipartisan gun control measures passed by the last Congress.

Boebert’s proposed bill, the Shall Not Be Infringed Act, would “repeal the gun control provisions and every Second Amendment infringement” that was passed and by the 117th Congress and signed into law by President Biden.

That includes the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the 2023 Omnibus Appropriations bill, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2023, and the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act, according to the bill.

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was touted as the most significant legislation to address gun violence in nearly 30 years. Biden signed the legislation into law last June.

The bill enhanced background checks for gun purchasers between the age of 18 and 21, made obtaining firearms through straw purchases or trafficking a federal offense and incentivized states to pass red flag laws, which seek to keep guns away from people deemed a threat to themselves or others, among other provisions.

The legislation was drafted in response to a string of mass shootings that occurred in the U. S. last year, which included massacres at a supermarket in Buffalo, N. Y., and an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Beobert’s bill would also repeal provisions from the 2023 Omnibus Appropriations bill such as cutting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive’s 14.1 percent budget increase, defunding federal programs that track where veterans are storing their guns, and efforts to promote so-called safe storage.

Texas Republican Deflects To Store 'Trashing,' Need For God After Mall Shooting

Rep. Keith Self (R-Texas) brushed away criticism that “prayers aren’t cutting it” and shifted the focus to “the trashing of stores in Chicago” during a CNN interview in the wake of a mass shooting that killed at least 8 people at a Dallas-area outlet mall on Saturday.
Self, whose congressional district includes the site of the deadly shooting in Allen, Texas, told CNN’s Paula Reid that he’s “of course” concerned about the rise of such instances of gun violence before looking to other matters of “violence.”

“Absolutely, any time there is violence whether it be in one of the big cities: riots, the trashing of stores in Chicago, or shootings like this. This is a very safe area. This is not usual,” Self said.
“I know that we hear about the number of deaths on a weekend in Chicago, this is not usual in this area.”

The outlet mall shooting added to the list of nearly 200 mass shootings across the U. S. this year, as of Saturday, according to Gun Violence Archive. There have been 14,600 deaths related to gun violence in America this year, the site noted.

Reid later asked Self about criticism that “prayers aren’t cutting it” when it comes to addressing gun violence before the Texas Republican took aim at the analysis.
“Well, those are people that don’t believe in an almighty God who has... who is absolutely in control of our lives,” said Self, who later emphasized a need for more ways to address mental health and remarked that he’d “like to stay away from the politics today” to focus on the shooting victims.

I met her through work and it was an instant connection. I fell for her instantly. We've been talking for a little over a year, phone only, but since Christmas we've called and text each other every day. 3 weeks ago she started to distance herself from me and I don't know why. I don't know if it's because she's just moved to London, or if its me. I'm positive she liked me back but we never admitted it to each other, I know she has an image in her mind of the perfect partner which she won't compromise on and I didn't tick all the boxes, the age difference was too much. I've respected the fact we were only friends and never pushed any boundaries, although she made it difficult at times.

Before she arrived, I never felt and didn't expect to feel things. I was alone, and miserable with no hopes of it getting better. She has taught me so much. She's inspired me to be better. I'm working on myself mind, body, and soul because of her. She's given me the drive to want more out of life. She's helped me through my darkest days, and made me feel like such a winner. I know I've helped her a lot too. We came into each others lives at just the right time.

She's stopped taking my calls, and responding to my texts. It started slow, missed call here and there which has not happened for as long as I've been talking to her. Texts became shorter. I haven't heard from her in over a week now, quite suddenly after months of communication several times a day. In in London now partially to see her which we arranged weeks ago but instead I'm just wondering around alone. It's upsetting me soo much. I feel like whatever it was we had, is over. But I don't want to leave anything unsaid, no regrets. I want to tell her exactly how she made feel, and thank her for everything she's done.

I feel like she's shut the door by cutting the communication, but if I send her the text I have written in my notes, 99% that will lock it, 1% she will open up again and confess her feelings to me too.

Republican states could be hit hardest by McCarthy's proposed spending cuts

The spending-cut proposals unveiled by U. S. House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Monday could fall hardest on people in Republican-leaning states, a Reuters analysis of federal spending data found.

McCarthy's plan, which he presented as a condition for raising the United States's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling, calls for cutting some agency budgets by 7% this year and capping their growth by 1% annually after that.

It also would impose stiffer work requirements on some benefit programs, which could reduce the number of people who receive them.

McCarthy only laid out broad contours on Monday, rather than unveiling finished legislation, which makes it difficult to determine the proposed cuts' precise toll.

But a Reuters analysis of federal spending data indicates that his proposed domestic-spending caps could be felt most acutely in the states that backed Republican President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

Much of that money is distributed through formulas that take factors like poverty into account. As a result, federal aid does not play as big a role in relatively wealthy, Democratic-leaning states like New Jersey that are more able to raise their own taxes to fund safety-net programs, said Marcia Howard, executive director of Federal Funds Information for States.
