as a symbol of the sun, light, wisdom, and enlightenment. It also means a guardian or protector.

More than a sniper would. So Luffy and other amateurs have to focus and prepare to use their "Haki"... but for shanks... it all happens natural by itself without to put any effort. Remember the scene where he entered whitebeards ship? Almost everyone passed out without any effort. And so would that be with his other haki types.

Armanent Haki > not just weapons but also his environment. (As he is a protector, it would require)

Observation Haki > Eagle sight and greater

Conqueror's haki > An entire Island... and not just his environment
