Texas Lawmakers Want Religious Indoctrination In Schools — May God Help Us All

In a disturbing yet not exactly surprising move, Republicans in the Texas statehouse have taken the first steps toward passing three bills that inject religion into public schools. One requires public schools to display “in a conspicuous place” the Ten Commandments in every classroom. Another measure will allow schools to require prayer and Bible reading time each school day for students and employees who give their consent to participate.
A third bill would ensure school employees the right to “engage in religious speech or prayer while on duty.”

It’s not the first effort by Texas Republicans to inject religion into public schools. In 2021, the state passed a law requiring schools to display donated “In God we trust” signs.

And if you think these bills don’t have a shot at passing muster in the U. S. Supreme Court (should they be appealed on constitutional grounds), guess again.

Texas lawmakers noted that the Supreme Court paved the way for these bills after it sided with Joe Kennedy, the high school football coach in Washington state who was fired for praying at football games. The court ruled that Kennedy was praying as a private citizen, not as an employee of the district.

GOP Sen. Tuberville blocked 184 military promotions in his ongoing abortion fight with the Pentagon

Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama blocked 184 military promotions Tuesday in the latest chapter of his protest against the Pentagon's new abortion policy.

The drama unfolded in the Senate as Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, moved a request to allow the promotions and Tuberville blocked the action.

"I warned Secretary Austin that if he did this and changed this, I would put a hold on his highest-level nominees. Secretary Austin went through with the policy anyway in February of this year, so I am keeping my word," Tuberville said on the Senate floor.

He has been blocking military promotions in objection to the Department of Defense providing leave and covering expenses for service members who travel to have abortions. Tuberville claims the policy is a violation of federal law.

Warren and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin say the promotions are critical to military readiness, and Tuberville is blocking pay raises and preventing key leaders from taking their posts.

"One senator is jeopardizing America’s national security," Warren said on the Senate floor.

The promotion of Shoshana Chatfield to vice admiral and as the U. S. representative to the NATO military committee is especially urgent, Warren said.

"At this critical juncture of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, we need her leadership in NATO now more than ever," she said.

Blocking military promotions leaves America more vulnerable, Austin said last month during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

Samuel Alito used his dissent in the abortion pill ruling to call out 3 justices in an act of judiciary 'theater,' SCOTUS expert says

A Supreme Court ruling on Friday ensured the abortion pill mifepristone can still be purchased and used in the US, freezing a lower court ruling that would've effectively banned access to the pill.

Two justices, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, publicly dissented, with the latter writing an opinion in which he called out three female justices by name — including fellow conservative justice Amy Coney Barrett — in an apparent act of judiciary "theater," Scott Lemieux, a professor of political science at the University of Washington and an expert on the Supreme Court and constitutional law, told Insider.

The case came to the court after a judge in Texas ruled to suspend the Food and Drug Administration's more-than-20-year-old approval of mifepristone. The Biden administration asked the Supreme Court to grant an emergency request that would protect the FDA approval while the case is still being litigated.

Because it was an emergency request, the case was reviewed under what is known as the court's "shadow docket," where they rule on procedural matters. Cases that are considered on the shadow docket do not get the same level of review as other cases, meaning "the decisions are accompanied by little to no explanation and often lack clarity on which justices are in the majority or minority," according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

Indeed, while the Court said they were granting the Biden administration's request, no explanation was provided by the majority as to why. The ruling did not specify how most of the justices voted, or even how many justices voted in favor. Both Thomas and Alito elected to note their dissents, with only one of them explaining why.
