Good guys just box themselves into what's right and wrong... then fall short of doing what really needs to be done.

He prevented Kaido from interfering with the marineford war.

Now let's get on to his fighting abilities > he possesses all 4 Types of haki which are maxed out. He uses his sword "Gryphon". A gryphon is an eagle-like animal. What are special about eagles? Their sight and prey hunting. Which would be his observation haki. So like an eagle > He would foresee upcoming events or attacks way sooner. He would spot enemies from a way further distance. More than a sniper would. So Luffy and other amateurs have to focus and prepare to use their "Haki"... but for shanks... it all happens natural by itself without to put any effort. Remember the scene where he entered whitebeards ship? Almost everyone passed out without any effort. And so would that be with his other haki types.

Armanent Haki > not just weapons but also his environment. (As he is a protector, it would require)

Observation Haki > Eagle sight and greater

Conqueror's haki > An entire Island... and not just his environment

Intimidation Haki > No sea monster would dare to attack him. He makes his opponents shiver to the bones. (Watch how Akainu was terribly frightened. He was sweating as well). Mihawk left the war.
