Why do people make fun of fat people at the gym?

That makes me super angry. Isn't that what you want? Don't you want them to get healthy? They're actually trying to fix the problem, and they even get made fun doing that. There's no winning with society. 

There was this really big lady who was on a treadmill at my gym today, and guys where snickering and pointing at her! Are you serious? Why would you make her visit to get her life back on track even more difficult by making fun of her? It literally makes no sense.

How old were those guys, may I ask? Your age or mine? I ask this because I'm noticing a growing trend of pathetic losers who do something like that to other people and they're in MY age group.

I could make a case for them--humor IS subjective, and if something strikes you as funny, you can't help it. For instance, I find a video very hilarious that many people find funny and it happens to be Sharon Obsorne (butchered her name) on The Talk talking about a woman who chopped off her guy's penis and threw it in the garbage disposal because he wanted a divorce. We see "big people" comically set up on treadmills all the time on Family Guy, so if those guys weren't intentionally meaning to be malicious, I can't blame them.

Yet, I doubt it's as sophisticated as that.

Because they're jerks. They don't care about the persons health. Anyone who makes fun of an overweight person, but then claims it's because they care about the health are liars. Someone who genuinely cares about a persons health will address it in a polite way.

People laughing at someone overweight and working out are just bullies. I get made fun of all the time for being ugly, and I am sure they don't have a good reason behind it.

It makes me mad to though. Someone I know was making fun of a girl who was overweight while she was going out for a jog. I told her off for it and she just shrugged. She didn't care that the girl heard her comments.

People are disgusting when it comes to these things. They sit there and bitch and complain about "fat people this" and "fat people that" but make it literally quite impossible for these overweight people to feel safe or welcomed in any sort of work out environment.

For the same reason why people bully in general. Hierachy thinking as well as covering up their own insecurities by picking on the seemingly weakest one.

Add to it that a lot of people go to gyms 2-3 times just to never come back and that most people who work out regulary have self-esteem issues and you have a fertile soil for such behaviour.

What to do about it? Speak up to the guys and encourage the big lady. While obesity is a clear signal for mental weakness in pretty much all non-illness related cases (don't mistake being obese because of being ill with being ill because of being obese), there is nothing but respect for those who seek to improve themselves.

the first step to being healthy is getting yourself to work up the nerve to go to the gym followed by ignoring people making fun of you because you are not fit this is a repeating process everyday. people like to watch others fail to make themselves feel better. its sickening

That is one of the reasons why I no longer go to gyms. They make fun of you for being fat and make fun of you for trying to do something about it. You just can't win. No thank you. I don't need to stares or the snickering. I'll workout from home.

I have never seen something like that at any of my gyms before, usually guys snicker and poke fun is when we see people fucking up their lifts, or a girl who is trying too hard for our attention, or we group up if we see a girl who is fine af to talk about her ass and other things

It's fucked up. Knowing that people do that, even if they aren't nor ever have specifically been cruel to me, makes me not want to go to the gym. Because too many people are waaayyy too far up other people's asses being judgmental.

And to do it to someone at a gym is just... the lowest of the low. They should shut up or offer constructive advice / tips or words of encouragement. NOT fuckin' laugh at her.

That's one of the bad things of being fat, people will make fun of you everywhere. It's pointless, I know, but the best thing a fat one can do in this case is losing weight and show people that they shouldn't do it (or shut them up). Oh, I was fat once, I know what you mean and I do know what I'm talking about.

I might find it amusing considering it can look funny, but I would never laugh at them considering they are doing the right thing.

Fat people aren't good for the society, so the fact that they actively go to the gym and lose weight is something they should be encouraged to do, NOT scared away from by people laughing in their face.
