It has multiple aspects to it:
1.) It has cultural roots.
Back in old days, those who were poor usually would work in the field, get a lot of tan and look quite dark. While those who were wealthy would stay indoors, thus barely would get any tan. Therefore having a fair skin was an indicator that you're from a wealthy family.

2.) Attitude towards women; in Europeoid cultures (i. e. "white") women generally have significantly more rights (do I need to remind where did "women's rights" even originated and are developed the most? Yeap, predominantly Europeoid ("white") countries) and there's a cultural aspect of "chivalry" (which, surprisingly, mainly exists in Europeoid cultures (i. e. "white").
Now "white" girls nowadays, *ESPECIALLY* in western societies, have a feeling that they're automatically entitled to have their asses kissed for just having a vagina, while Indian/Asian girls are aware of other cultures, it's shenanigans and attitude towards women in their ancestral communities.
Therefore they desire Europeoid men ("white") as it nearly guarantees a better treatment for them from those men; additionally,. men do like women that appreciate when they're treated with respect, unlike a good half of self-entitled Europeoid girls that take it for granted.
Now before you get all triggered and whatnot, I must explain that the point is not that every other male of other race is automatically bad. Obviously there are good men in Indian/Asian societies too, bad Europeoids in Europeoid societies too, and minorities that are living in predominantly Europeoid and it's culture influenced societies too, however:
Those Indian/Asian girls do believe that in percentages alone there are less chances of them bumping into Europeoid ("white") man that's going to treat them the same (or worse) than a man from their ancestral community, while chances of getting an Europeoid man that's going to treat them way better than a man from their ancestral community is higher. Consider it somewhat similar to a risk management in business world.
Combine all these things together and you have an answer.
Caste system is always no where to be found in Big cities. Also what many people don't know and there has always been political debates about it is that people from lower castes get a lot of benefits under constitution. There are seats/vacancies reserved for Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes people in all educational institution. Also govt. jobs are considered very prestigious in India and people from lower castes get early promotions cause there also some posts are reserved for them. Western media will NEVER show this because they ALWAYS antagonize India. Especially the British who never got over the fact that they were kicked out from India some 70 years back
Also no it is not influenced by parents but it is the general psych of people to date within their own race. I think in western countries there has been an exponential increase in inter-racial marriages and relations because media glorify black men-white women relations these days. Most inter-racial couples involve black man-white woman for this reason
@dudegrt09 could be; but as pointed out by a girl in this question, one must better ask an Indian girl on this matter, as both of us may have their own prejudices on the matter.
I tried to stay neutral on this one, as we barely have any Indians in Russian Federation, therefore I came to my guess explained above during my studies in the UK, plus browsing the internet on this phenomenon.
After all, my answer was basically my personal view and opinion on this matter.
There are plenty of Indian girls who have given their opinions @Schrodingerscat and @beautifulpromisesx and @datgirl. Also my home is India so I have taken opinions from A LOT of Indian girls on this matter and 95% would prefer a Hindu guy. Caucasians are not considered special here at all, at least for women. Yeah but men somehow do have a fascination to some extent with caucasian women. I have always only dated Caucasian women but it seems very unlikely that I will marry any.

Well Asians specifically Chinese and Japanese like white men because in their own society white and pure/lighter skin is something they strive for they find it better looking and or beautiful. For some reason, it also has to do with the fact that they associate white men aka European and American men with strength, dominance, confidence and other things more, because these are things that their own men lack in their own countries and their men have been getting weaker the last few years I guess, their words not mine.
Asians don't bad mouth and look down on their own men though they just wish they'd be a little more I guess manly for lack of a better word.
I can't speak for Indian women though I know nothing about what they prefer.
You will never know if you are not an Asian. I guess it's because of their culture. I am Asian (living in Asian country) and if i marry to Asian (getting married is important in my culture) i should obey their family and husband.

A lot of people have ideas that certain other kinds of men will be this or that and it's largely just idealism. The fact is that people are just people. There are cultural influences and domestic influences but people still remain just people. Good people, bad people, lazy people, hard working people, nice people, creepy people, all just people. You get all of those types of people in every single race and every single country on earth.
There is no such thing as a generic white man or a generic black man or a generic Asian man. Every single person is an individual with their own characteristics.
I mean I've met some Asian American girls who only seemed to want to date white guys but I think that was mostly because they had a pretty shitty relationship with their parents and maybe that's their way of rebelling or whatever. But when it comes to actual Asia I really haven't noticed this with Indian girls, only with some East Asian girls who mostly want to date a white guy cause they think all white people are rich or are looking to escape poverty.
Haha it is a misnomer, again perpetuated by media. I don't know about east Asian women, but normally Indian women don't give much attention to white guys. You have no idea how many responsibilities an Indian women can have and so do I think other Asian women have... We are made into a lady in a smaller age and we work even harder than men here... If a son follows his mother's orders I don't think there is anything wrong with it up to a limit though.
