NEVER ask a girl up front out (while she's working). It could seem like a joke/ odd. You should approach a girl while she doesn't seem too busy while working (that way she isn't stressed out and is naturally relaxed) you can start by pretending to be interested in the product she is selling and asking for her opinion on things (Which shirt do you think would look better on me? or do you think I can pull off these shoes?) If she seems friendly and not just "work-oriantated" you should move onto more personal/ firendly conversation (Do you buy your boyfriend things from here with your discount all the time? / I'm glad I've found such an awesome girl to help me with my shopping) this way, you can find out if she is available/ interested. If you are getting all the right signals once you're done tlaking you can tell her you'd like to see her again/ you appreciate her help/ you think she's a great girl whatever. She might not be able to hand out her phone number while working (policy) so give her your number or ask her if she has a break/ next time she's working to see if you can get together sometime. Good luck :)

My little piece of advice is to find out if she's single fairly early to make sure you ain't wasting your time.
I would recommend trying to go at an off-peak time, when you may have more time to communicate at the register. I would maybe make some kind of comment or mention/say something that shows interest first, like (and don't quote this) "Nice, my favorite cashier" or even more straightforward "You're really pretty, I wish I could see you more often (if it is indeed implied that you do n't need to come to this store often), umm... would you like to go out sometime?"
I haven't given good examples here, but I think a little talk, just a comment or compliment, and then asking might go well.
I dream that these situations would work, but they rarely do. Most girls don't like being seen at work, let alone be hit on and offer their number to customers and strangers.
