What do you know about Turkey in general?

About it's history, people, culture etc.

I know used to be Ottoman Empire and Oghuz Turkish culture influenced by Persians, Arabic, and a little Byzantine culture. I tried learning some Turkish but found the language to be too hard and also I have no practical reason to learn it.
Out of Middle Eastern cultures I am most interested in Iranian since I think they have more original culture and history.

That they used to be really nice and a good place to visit, but then elected a horrible person named Erdogan who made the country more religious and less European and more middle eastern. Most of my friends no longer want to visit because of the conservative nature.

It still depends on City, if you visit cities with the sea side like izmir, mugla, Antalya, mersin, you will see that most people are not islamic and they are secular there. In Turkey maybe 40% of people still love the president but others hate him

yeah you are right, I shouldn't generalize, I bet you those cities you mentioned are not fans of him and are very nice places to visit!

Yes, i am lucky that i was born in one of those cities, and most people are not fan of him there. He and his party never won a local election there
