It being noted that the Palestinian Authority President is in t he 17th year of his 4 year term. That said, from an American perspective, it should properly be viewed as a strategic calculation, not a moral decision.
Insofar as the current Mideast situation is concerned, the conflict was born when under the Balfour Declaration of 1917, the British - then the imperial power in the region - made what is today Israel a homeland for the Jews. This being affirmed by the United Nations Organization after World War II.
As to who may stake an ultimate claim, under international law, the area was divided into two states, but the Arab states rejected this and attacked. In the end, the attack failed and the whole area became Israel and the Arabs who lived in the region considered themselves to be occupied.
As to who has the historic claim, it is lost in the mists of time. Strictly speaking the Jews arrived in the region well before the Arabs. The Arabs not arriving in the Middle East until 636 AD - long after the Jews had settled the region. The Jews themselves having not been native to the region but having arrived from the Semitic tribes of Mesopotamia in about the 2nd millennium BC.
Suffice to say, a problem with that historic an ancestry is not apt to be settled by appeals to the historical record, much of which is obscured in the mists of time. The twist being that a PALESTINIAN people - as opposed to more generic Arab peoples - is a recent invention. Born primarily in the 20th century as an outgrowth of - in another irony - European imperialism.
Thus, Palestinian national identity is relatively thin gruel and why, in fact, it has become less of a force in the Middle East. Indeed, it is why the Palestinian cause is now led mostly by pan-Islamist forces - see also HAMAS. Pan-Islam being a forced that defines identity not in national terms but in religious ones.
The further irony being that after the Palestinian nationalists supported Iraq against Kuwait in the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf War, the Arab states began to abandon the Palestinian cause. Such today that the principle benefactor of the Sunni Muslim Palestinian Arabs is Shiite Muslim Persian Iran.
Thus today, the current fireworks in the Middle East is more deceptive than not. The Palestinian cause - as a nationalist cause - is largely dead. Being more akin to a civil rights movement than a nationalist cause. The Arab states have largely abandon it in favor of peace with Israel as a counterweight to Iran.
The Palestinians, never having had a deep sense of national identity, are recurring to a more general sense of Arab and Muslim identity. In this the Iranians are backing them largely as a way to pressure their Arab rivals - particularly Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, the latter two of which already have peace treaties with Israel.
Suffice to add that if Saudi Arabia - keeper of the Muslim Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina - were to make peace with Israel, it would likely split the Muslim world wide open. Particularly along the Sunni/Shiite divide but even within Sunni Islam.
CONT.14 Reply- +1 y
As it is Saudi-Israeli ties are actually quite good as both strongly oppose Iran. The Saudis however being understandably reluctant to formalize those relations in a peace treaty, though negotiations are ongoing. It is these negotiations against which the current exchange of fire between Israel and HAMAS in the Palestinian Gaza Strip is aimed at disrupting.
In a nutshell, this is less about Palestinian national identity - which is fading - than it is about Iran's conflict with the Sunni Arab world. The predominantly Sunni Muslim Arab Palestinians finding themselves in an alliance of convenience with Shiite Persian Iran, and in effect being Iran's catspaw. It being added that unless things get wildly out of hand, the Arabs are apt to sit on their hands and let Israel and Iran settle the matter over the Palestinian's heads. - +1 y
Yeah but here's the strange thing about it if you drive from Eilat Israel ๐ฎ๐ฑ through Jordan ๐ฏ๐ด into Saudi Arabia ๐ธ๐ฆ they won't let you in with a Israeli passport or even a foreign passport with an Israeli visa stamp so I don't know how friendly these countries are but that's on the official side of things unofficially there is trade between the two countries.
- +1 y
@yofuknutz They are NOT friendly. This is about power relationships and balancing costs and benefits.
It is always well to recall the guiding ethos of international relations as summed up in several quotes. They are:
From Lord Palmerston: "We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and perpetual, and those interests it is our duty to follow."
From Theodore Roosevelt: "World peace comes not from human kindness or moral restraint, but from balanced power; equilibriums of force restraining the selfish aims of nation-states."
From Camillo di Cavour: "Astonish them with my ingratitude." (His response when asked by a reporter what he would do for the Italian liberals who helped him unite Italy.)
Victor Davis Hanson (paraphrasing Thucydides): "Power, not justice... is always the final arbiter of state relations; self-interest, not morality, is what guides and must guide the behavior of states. Appeals to mercy or hope for reprieve are misguided, not rooted in logic or a realistic understanding of human behavior."
CONT. - +1 y
The Arab states do not love Israel. In fact, among their populations there is a large segment that either for reasons of religion or nationalism regard any deal with Israel as anathema. The Arab governments have to be aware of this and tread lightly.
Yet they have come to realize that Iran is their principle enemy, the Palestinian cause is, at best, stalemated and at worst finished, and Israel does not represent an existential threat and shares the Arab world's dislike of Iran. This is a de facto and largely unspoken alliance of convenience, not of passionate love.

reason why there are more deaths on the Palestinian side is that Hamas uses the same children you talked about as human shields. Hamas fires missiles from civilian buildings, Hamas establishes its headquarters inside schools, kindergartens and institutions where there are innocent civilians and children. Hamas does not care about protecting Palestinian civilians, it uses them to protect itself. - Unfortunately this is not the truth, Hamas is a terror organization They use innocent children and people to protect themselves and doesn't care if those people will die and get hurt. Before we bomb a building, that Hamas are using for terror benefits, we make sure that there are no innocent civilians there! If you really want to stand for humanity, you should check the facts again and understand that Hamas is the one that is hurting Israelis and the people of Gaza as well!!! It is a *terror* organization and Israel has the right to defend itself when Hamas and Jihad (another terror organization) attack our country!! We all want peace, but we have the right to defend our people and our land facing terror!! For your information, you should know that Hamas are shooting missiles from hospitals and schools towards Israel , While in Israel our hospitals take care of all humans, Please next time check the facts and history

Well I stand by Palestine because Israeli are invaders and wanna get rid off the Palestinian race cos they wanna invade the mosque Al aqsa which was built by Soulaiman the prophet and it's Muslims prophet not jewish and also the muslim people have lived there since the age of stones even Mohamed has lived there... And the history has witnessed the Isra and meeraj trip in there..
They wanna have all the natural richness and also bcz Palestine is situated in a strategic area that's why America is supporting Israel...
There's also hatred of the islam knowing that they even created something called Islamophobia...
That's shameful people should be free to worship who ever they want and without being judged or bothered...
My English level is really poor or I'd be able to explain more, and by the way the indifference of people is killing me... Is it okay to deprive children, older people and women from their home regardless of the history bcz we live in the present now?
And that's their home as long as they are there they didn't choose what their great grandfathers did...
They are killing people in cold blood for their own benefits, that's harsh and brutal it's not worth tolerating...
And people keep talking about things they don't know anything about, study the case and the history n start debating instead of commenting about things u have heard of ur family or coffee shop...
Ik I'll get a lotta insults by the way

The USS Liberty was not an accident.
It was an Israeli attack, with the support and possible instigation of Lyndon Johnson, to create an incident that would be blamed on the Arabs, so that Johnson could claim justification for an open war against the Arab world.
Johnson's plan failed with the USS Liberty fought off the attack and the surviving members of the crew told their story, which was not reported by the Jewish-owned US mainstream media.
Fun fact: Until the Iranian embassy hostages in 1979, Israel was the only country in the Middle East that had carried out acts of war against the USA on a government level.
As well as the attack on the USS Liberty (act of war), there was the Lavon Affair (act of war) in 1954.

I wish it was true that Israel invaded Gaza first because they never should have given up Gaza in the first place. It was a gesture of peace Israel offered by giving up Gaza and they asked nothing in return except peace. Nothing like that has ever happened in the history of the world before. But as soon as the Arabs got it they immediately used it to launch terrorist attacks on Israel. And they are STILL doing it TO THIS DAY.
I wish Israel would roll the tanks into Gaza, take it back, and execute every member of that barbaric Muslim terrorist organization Hamas. But unfortunately, they aren't doing it. - +1 y
That's bullshit. Jews have lived on that land continuously for thousands of years. They took NOTHING.
There has never been a nation called Palestine. The only small number of Arabs who lived there were nomadic people and the Israelis took NOones property or home. The Jews are the INDIGINOUS PEOPLE of Israel and have been since antiquity. When the modern nation of Israel was formed that land was an UNINHABITABLE desert. No one wanted it and the people who owned the land were glad to sell it and get rid of it. The Israelis turned it into a beautiful oasis in the desert and then suddenly everyone else wanted it. TOO FUCKING BAD! The Israelis LEGALLY OWN that land. They are the indigenous people on that land, they LEGALLY AQUIRED THAT LAND *AGAIN* in modern times, and they are not going anywhere in spite of people like you who are spreading the propaganda of Iran and their terrorist puppets like Hamas. - +1 y

And Israeli government live because of war. By promising to protect the citizens against terrorists, they keep being reelected.
Truth is, Palestinians would never accept a middle ground, they want the Israelis eradicated. And Israelis will never give up on the land.
But I can't support Palestinians when people are importing their conflict in my country, and end up burning stuff, threatening, insulting. Can you believe this? Its so sad. they attacked their mosque on eid. its a disgrace. today we see that they bombed the Palestinian media tower... its clearly visible that Israel is against humanity. In general, Muslims are being killed. Srebrenica, Syrians, Kosovo war, etc. What Israel is doing right now is genocide. Its shameful. I hope Palestine will be saved.
21 ReplyFundamentally, Palestine was invaded by Ashkenazi Jews from Europe, who have treated the Palestinians terribly.
The Arab world did not know what modern terrorism was, until the Jewish terrorist Irgun and Stern gangs educated them.
Entire Palestinian towns were exterminated by Jewish terrorists during the 1940s, to terrorise the Palestinians into fleeing.
The Palestinians want their ancestral homeland back. That is understandable and reasonable.
The Israeli Jews do not want to be driven into the sea and exterminated.
That is also understandable.
I cannot propose a solution to this situation.20 Reply- 1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.

You can only rely on the "we're surrounded by enemies" line for a limited time before the facts smash that narrative into tiny pieces.
They are surrounded the way a pre-school teacher is surrounded. They are VASTLY more powerful than their neighbors and they treat the Palestinians the way the strong have historically treated the weak.
The retaliation is wrong and misguided but totally understandable. Israels continued domination and destruction is wrong, and it utterly not understandable to anyone with a shred of moral decency or any knowledge of the facts on the ground.33 Reply- +1 y
I mean... Israel can't just let Hamas keep firing missiles at them. Every offensive action Israel has taken in its history was for the sake of defense and survival, it is how the Arab league failed to wipe them out multiple times. "Israel can't just let Hamas keep firing missiles at them."
Sure they can. They won't but they could. However, this isn't a suggestion. You say this as if Israel's response is the only other possible response. Just let them keep firing, or bomb the ever loving shit out of them and kill women and children. Those are the only two options, right? WRONG.
It isn't. And your framing it this way indicates you're already not interested in facts or reality.
"Every offensive action Israel has taken in its history was for the sake of defense and survival"
Not true. Israel has taken multiple pre-emptive strikes in its history. More often against Iran. But perhaps most famously during the 6 Day War. On 5 June, Israel launched a series of airstrikes against Egyptian airfields, initially claiming that it had been attacked by Egypt, but later stating that the airstrikes were pre-emptive. They've often had that problem. Claim one thing, until the evidence makes you admit something else. Then again, the motto of Mossad is "By deception shall you make your war" right? You should read Victor Ostrovsky's book, if you haven't.
Maybe you're ignorant? But coupled with your first comment, I'm going with you being biased and disingenuous again.
"it is how the Arab league failed to wipe them out multiple times."
Also not true - the Arab league has not tried to wipe Israel out multiple times, unless you're also deceptively sweeping every arab conflict with Israel as involving the league.
"I think they have the right to stop Hamas after years of human shields, targeting civilians, and calling for the death of all jews."
Oh well, now you're just being a dick. If an organisation within a country is committing crimes, you don't target the whole area and civilians. That would be like America invading Italy because of a mob hit.
It's called PROPORTIONAL RESPONSE and it's something I advocated for throughout my answer. Go back to shilling on some other website.- +1 y
Israel has been telling people to leave the areas and have been dropping leaflets. No, they can't let terrorist keep bombing civilian areas and I am more angry at Hamas for setting up their missile position in civilian areas and using schools has headquarters. Hamas has literally been using human shields so no, I am not being a dick im just being honest. Israel has the right to stop their people from being bombed, they have been trying to use anti-missile defense for years but it doesn't get them all, the U. S. has failed to get them to stop, they are taking the gloves off and honestly they have the right to. No other country would be putting up with that shit, def not a western one. Yes, the pre-emptive strikes like the one in 1967 was off of intellegence that Egypt was about to invade with Jordan and I believe syria which was correct which led to the operation that crippled their airforces and made sure israel survived. I also apologize for mentioning the Arab league which was incorrect, I meant most of the surrounding arab countries which would support the wars against Israel.

I stand with Israel. I don't care what the history of the conflict is; they are the aggressors in this round of fighting, and there is absolutely no justification for staging your military operations beside civilians. There's only one word for a man who would fire his missile truck from an apartment complex, or stash his weapon depot in an crowed elementary school; that word is "terrorist." Well, it just isn't accurate. The muslims did not always hate the jews, during the Umayyad Caliphate jews were allowed to serve in government and they acted as trust middle men between christians and muslims. During the 1400s, the ottomans allowed jewish enclaves to exist in Anatolia and they were also allowed in Maracco. The idea of all christians and jews must be wiped out and converted is honestly new to Islam, the form of islam being introduced in the 1700s by the ruling house of Wahhฤbฤซ in modern day saudi arabia. This interpretation of islam is called radical islam in the west. So no they have not been kill eachother for 1500 years, there were some conflicts but most of those actually didn't have to do with the fact that one side believed in a certain arabrahamic religion. @Alexandrubaschet08 Muslims have taken over and they will prevail. Hadn't jews gone out of the God's ways and unjustly kill the prophets, none of that would happen. And no they are not going
anywhere. Good luck with that ๐.
Also, learn to spell properly. Makes your talk lose worth and added to it is your stupidity. - +1 y
