Conservatives say it more. As a liberal it just seems weird to say. I hear that quote and think " No shit Sherlock, this is why we are speaking and also have plans to go back home." No one is getting sent to the gulag, let alone dying, chill the fuck out.

It's an old quote dating back to 18th century France. Amarican revolution had stong ties with the French revolutionaries and influenced the constitution and the declaration of independence. I get that it's important historically in the turbulent experiment being early American democracy but how relevant is it today?

Saying "eat shit and die" today means basically nothing on the internet. Back in 18th century you get tarred and feathered if your lucky being a majority ethnic group. You can guess the minority ethnic groups punishment.

I think 10 or 20 years ago liberals were a bit more in favor of freedom of speech, and classical liberals certainly were. But in modernity the left gleefully labels anything and everything they don't like as hate speech that needs to be removed and censored.

In the context of American politics, that would be the conservatives. In the context of what those two labels mean by definition, it would be the liberals. People with actual "liberal" ideology in the US would more than likely be libertarians or semi-moderate Republicans.

That statement is probably more closely related to conservatives, since conservative thought puts an emphasis on individuals taking care of themselves, while liberal thought puts an emphasis on government taking care of individuals.
